I had to get Becky away. Reluctantly, Becky got up and kissed the wolf on the nose before she walked slowly into my outstretched arms. Sad yellow eyes followed her. With Becky safe in my arms, I ran to the barns where Brian, one of our cowhands, was saddling up to check heifers in the north pasture. Come quickly. Becky found a wolf in the oak stump near the wash! I think it has rabies!

I kissed her and gave her some stuffed animals to play with. Moments later, I reached the oak stump. Brian stood looking down at the beast. Then we both caught the smell of gangrene. That afternoon my husband, Bill, and our veterinarian came to see the wolf. The yellow eyes closed. The animal must have been over five feet long and well over one-hundred pounds.

The hip and leg had been mutilated by bullets. Doc did what he had to in order to clean the wound and then gave the patient a dose of penicillin.

Next day he returned and inserted a metal rod to replace the missing bone. Becky named the wolf Ralph and carried food and water to the stump every day. For three months he dragged his injured hindquarters by clawing the earth with his front paws. From the way he lowered his eyelids when we massaged the atrophied limbs, we knew he endured excruciating pain, but not once did he ever try to bite the hands of those who cared for him. Four months to the day, Ralph finally stood unaided. His huge frame shook as long-unused muscles were activated.

Bill and I patted and praised him. But it was Becky to whom he turned for a gentle word, a kiss or a smile. He responded to these gestures of love by swinging his bushy tail like a pendulum. As his strength grew, Ralph followed Becky all over the ranch. When evening came, he returned like a silent shadow to his hollow stump that had surely become his special place.

As time went on, although he lived primarily in the brush, the habits of this timid creature endeared him more and more to all of us. His reaction to people other than our family was yet another story.

Strangers terrified him, yet his affection for and protectiveness of Becky brought him out of the desert and fields at the sight of every unknown pickup or car. After the bus left, he refused to return to the yard. Instead, he lay by the side of the road and waited. Without approval from either their boyfriends or the gum-chewing FBI agent in charge, the shop owners go on stakeouts, plan stings, and pursue justice in a high-speed car chase.

I love cozies. Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass by Gilbert is a new favorite in this category. The main character is an exotic pet-sitter. So no kittens or dogs. In this case, the snake Belinda is caring for plays an important role. Quirky characters? At least one, and Belinda is a little out-of-the-ordinary herself. Her other job is to review video games. How can she then hold Stone accountable for having a real job? But what I especially liked was the fact there was no bad language nor scenes I was ashamed to read.

Sure, there is hanky-panky somewhere behind the scenes. But if there were not, would there be any enemies or deaths? This was just a fun when not scary cozy. The action really started to snowball faster than I had expected, and a great tension ensues as Belinda searches for the killer before the killer finds her.

I was surprised at the outcome. Also, forbidden romances add romantic tension and puzzle to the novel as well. This in no way affects my opinions for which I am solely responsible. Years in the Calvary provided Nathaniel Peak with more than his share of violence and adventure.

That life behind him, he wants nothing more than to settle down in the beautiful Montana mountains and raise his own stock—in peace. The last thing he expects is the savagely wounded child who shows up in his barn. Little do they imagine, the choice they make could spell disaster for them all. I have never read Misty Beller before, but that was not a problem in reading this last book of the Heart of the Mountains Series, This Healing Journey.

Well-titled, several people actually find a form of healing in this novel of the s in Montana. Nathaniel Peak is a former cavalryman with regrets, hoping to leave that life behind to start his own ranch. Neighbors and visitors play heavily into this historical romance, with some visitors more welcome than others. Who will not lose their heart to sweet, stoic, little Itu, both brave and afraid? The point-of-view is always third person, although each chapter starts with a first person thought.

Since I had not read any books before this, I did have to go back a time or two and see who was whom. However, I felt that was pretty minor for picking up a series at book seven.

Becky's Homestead

At least Nathaniel knew his horses better than that! Hannah surprised me. This, then, leads her to worry that she will lose his love. However, this is a great story of faith, beginning anew, loving enough to forgive, and loving enough to let go. By the end, this had become a very exciting and unnerving story. You made the choice you felt was right, and God worked good from it. This in no way affects my opinions which are solely my own.

Misty M. She was raised on a farm in South Carolina, so her Southern roots run deep. Growing up, her family was close, and they continue to keep that priority today. Her husband and children now add another dimension to her life, keeping her both grounded and crazy. Occasionally I hear readers debate about whether they prefer to read a series of books from an author, or only standalone novels. Personally, I love series—both reading and writing them. Can you relate? Those characters are still so dear to my heart! When book 5 ended, I had so many readers ask for more in the series, I began dreaming of a spin-off series with a very special connection to the hero in book 5.

Enter: the Heart of the Mountains Series. Simeon Grant from Heart of the Mountains, book 1 goes on a journey to find the son he gave up for adoption as an infant the hero in Mountain Dreams, book 5. Mar 08, Karla rated it really liked it Shelves: ebook. This was a very cute story. The artwork wasn't that great, but the story itself is perfect for reading to the tots and captures the "big wide world" for the newborn chick. This story took me back to that very "Squee!
