Set years later, his world is now firmly in the throes of an industrial revolution — with magic in the mix. This is zippy, and a heart-wrencher. This, book two in the sequence, sees psychic protagonist Paige become the most wanted person in London after escaping from a penal colony. Part Western, part supernatural mystery, this stands out for its tough lead Nettie Lonesome, an outsider treated like a slave at home, until she fights off an attacker, with violent and unexpected consequences.

This is an important book that features a trans heroine in a sometimes diversity-lacking genre. In this, rumour has it, the old ruler of all the worlds is back and enforcing his cruel ways. The story is about a world where war is a constant. People fight and die all the time and the mercenary is one of the finest examples of manhood in this world. However, recently he has become tired and according to a doctor whom he slew following diagnosis he was using his sword arm too much in a repetitive motion.

Think warrior version of carpal tunnel syndrome. Feeling tired he temporarily retires to the mountains for a brief rest.

Meanwhile the royals of the kingdom a family that practices incest has its own issues. She seeks to awaken the ancient evils and to seize all that is powerful and magical in their world. Her ultimate goal is slightly elusive but the Vulture the mercenary is the key to her success. I rated this 3 mainly because I was turned off by the violence and gore which it seems maybe the forefront of the following series.

The incest among the families and the other evils which the royals will engage in seem to predict a darker story than I like. So far there is no "good" guy or gal to right the wrongs and I don't know if I can stick around long enough to find out if there will be one.

I enjoy stories where the line is drawn a little more clearly between the oppressors and the oppressed. I do feel that the dialogue and storytelling is pretty good even if it's somewhat gruesome. It's just not my kind of story. See my profile for a more detailed explanation.

I am looking forward to reading more about this character.
